The place of destiny

It is a parking lot. Nothing distinguishes it from other parking lots except the meaningful fact that a group of people has been told to stand there. Before anyone arrives, the painted lines serve cars. After people arrive, the lines acquire the authority of a geometry textbook.

Someone decides where the first person stands. Another person asks whether the first person is too far left. A third has strong feelings about the concept of left. The group adjusts six inches. It adjusts back four.

A weather forecast with a uniform on

The sun chooses the exact moment when everyone must remain stationary to become unusually persuasive. If there is wind, it attacks the few papers anyone has brought. If the sky threatens rain, the gathering discovers an ancient rule: rain begins precisely when a person announces it will probably hold off.

Military culture has plenty of genuinely demanding moments. A parking lot full of small logistical confusions does not rank among them, but it can feel ceremonially important for the duration.

The search for the missing person

There is always a short interval during which everyone tries to determine whether everyone is present. The math should be easy. It is not. Someone went to fetch someone else, creating two absences in service of solving one. A third person has reached the gathering but is standing at the wrong end. The clipboard has entered its heroic period.

Eventually the count works. Nobody celebrates. The celebration would itself require a schedule, a point of contact and probably a second clipboard.

Why everyone remembers it

Years later, almost nobody remembers the precise words spoken at the gathering. They remember the weather, the absurd rearranging, and the friend who made an unbearably serious face while everyone tried not to laugh. A frustrating routine has been converted into a shared story.

That is the affectionate part of the joke: even the least glamorous locations can become part of a community’s private map. The parking lot is just asphalt until memory decides otherwise.
